The five astronaut crewmembers for the STS-31 mission have chosen a busy night sky scene as a background for their portrait. Wearing mission t-shirts are (left to right) Pilot Charles F. Bolden, Mission Specialist (MS) Steven A. Hawley, Commander Loren J. Shriver, MS Bruce McCandless II, and MS Kathryn D. Sullivan.

The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) depicted in the upper left of the background scene is scheduled to be deployed from the payload bay (PLB) of Discovery, Orbiter Vehicle (OV) 103, by the crew. Portrait made by NASA JSC contract photographer Jack Jacob.
